Our gates finally opened last Monday – 18th May to members who are within 5km of the course. The whole club and pro-shop was all set up with signs, sanitiser dispenser’s many distance markers so there was no fear of anyone forgetting what the new normal is in golf clubs. The members arriving followed the signs and entered the ‘Pro-shop’ by the ‘Bar’ door to be met by Greg Massey – club pro and Johnny Dunican.
Unsurprisingly, demand on the timesheet was very high which resulted in a steady group of 3 balls all day with each group observing the 14-minute gap intervals, which resulted in average game time of 3 hours 45 minutes. Bunkers were in play with members requested to level out the sand with their shoes. As this was the first opportunity in weeks for members to hit a ball, the opening tee-shot on the 1st hole displayed moments of laughter, relief, also frustration with some colourful language and even a ‘fresh air’ or two!! The overwhelming feeling from players was sheer delight to be back playing the game they missed so much.
The feedback from all of was the course is in pristine condition and we owe a debt to our dedicated team of greenkeepers who, under the watchful eye of Ronan Branigan, Synergy Golf have put in tremendous work over the last two months to prepare the course for the re-opening. Also a big thank you to Greg and Johnny for all their efforts in preparing the pro-shop, dealing with payment queries and promoting the club to new members. We have had a considerable number of new members join our club in recent weeks as golf is one of the first sports to be re-introduced and this leads to great opportunities for the club going forward. A thank you also to members of the Men’s and Ladies committee’s who are supervising the front gate after pro-shop hours.
A final thank you to our members, for their unwavering support during the crisis and we look forward to seeing many of you on the course in the coming days and weeks!
